Why is smoking bad in asthma?

Smoking if you have a diagnosis of asthma is not a great idea.

In asthma, smoking continues to irritate the airways, maintaining a vicious cycle of inflammation. Inflammation is the underlying cause for asthma and treatments actually target this inflammation in various ways (inhalers with corticosteroids, biologic treatments etc. ). Continuing to smoke while having asthma leads to poor asthma control, more frequent attacks and exacerbations (flare-ups). More complex treatments (i.e more than one inhaler, tablets, steroids) are also needed to achieve control and this predisposes to more side effects and an overall deterioration in health.
